MLB Pitcher Derek Holland to Speak at Swing Fore Leukemia Golf Tournament

The Swing Fore Leukemia Golf Tournament is back on the greens for a great cause at Stonebriar Country Club in Frisco! Benefitting Leukemia Texas, Swing Fore Leukemia is scheduled for Tuesday, November 16, MLB pitcher Derek Holland will be the guest speaker.

“We are thrilled to finally be back in the swing of hosting events to help us achieve our mission,” said Jessica Dunn, Chief Executive Officer for Leukemia Texas. “We are the only organization of its kind in Texas with 100% of the funds we raise staying in Texas to help Texans by funding research and providing patient aid.”

Dallas native Cody Gribble, a past PGA Tour Champion, will be on a Par 5 for a “Out Drive the Pro” competition. Gribble won the 2017 Sanderson Farms Championship and became the second Texas Longhorn from the 2012 National Championship team to earn his PGA Tour card, following Jordan Spieth.

Derek Lane Holland is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Detroit Tigers. He has played in MLB for the Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox, San Francisco Giants, Chicago Cubs, and Pittsburgh Pirates. He is nicknamed "Dutch Oven.” In 2014, Derek created The 60 Feet 6 Foundation in memory of his friend who had passed from a rare pediatric disease. Named for the distance between the pitcher’s mound and home plate, the 60 feet 6 Foundation serves as a platform for Derek to lend his time, help grow awareness and offer direct financial support to charities dedicated to advancing the research and care for debilitating pediatric diseases, military veterans and their families, as well as organizations that focus on enhancing the well-being of the local community.

Texas Oncology is the presenting sponsor of the Swing Fore Leukemia Golf Tournament. Sponsorships and foursomes are still available for the tournament. The auction will feature a suite to the December 26 Dallas Cowboys game, a signed Dak Prescott jersey, a suite to either a Dallas Mavericks or Dallas Stars game, signed sports memorabilia and other fun items.

Stonebriar Country Club offers golfers an extraordinary experience on the Tom Fazio designed course. With an exceptional layout that winds through a picturesque landscape, Stonebriar’s golf course will challenge all skill levels.

In addition to the golf tournament, there are many other opportunities to support Leukemia Texas. The community can donate or adopt a Buddy the Bear that will be given to pediatric leukemia patients. Buddy the Bear is named after Buddy Minyard, who created Leukemia Texas in 1970 to support Texans who are in their leukemia journey. Buddy the Bear gives kids a huggable companion during treatments and hospital stays. Each bear comes with a note of encouragement to let the child know someone is thinking about them. Adoptions are $25 each and are also available at LeukemiaTexas.org.
